Understanding the Xbox 360 RROD
The famed red ring of death is perhaps the biggest fear among all
owners of the Xbox 360. Arguably the best gaming console out there
on the modern market today, the 360 offers high definition
capabilities, great online play, multiple features, and some of the
best exclusive games on the console market. Unfortunately, however,
a number of users have been plagued by the dreaded Xbox 360 RROD.
They pop in a favorite game, wait for the console to load, and
instead of the familiar green circle surrounding the power button
they are greeted by three red lights around the circle.
The Xbox 360 RROD can have many meanings. For example, if the first
light in the circle is the one that remains unlit, all you need to
do to fix the problem is unhook and reattach all your cables. A
failure in the second area will result in the second light remaining
unlit, which will tell you that your Xbox 360 is overheating.
Turning the machine off for a while can solve this, but you may want
to consider purchasing one of the fans that can be attached to the
machine to allow better air flow. If you have a full ring of red
lights, you simply need to reinsert the AV cable into the machine
until it clicks.

The problem with the Xbox 360 RROD comes when all but the third
light is flashing. This is the issue that sends most gamers into
instant fits of withdrawals as they imagine the months it will take
for Microsoft to repair and return their consoles. While sending the
machine back to the company is certainly an option, it may not be
the best option and certainly is not the fastest. The RROD can be
fixed with a bit of patience and the understanding that comes with
reading a well written guide for home repairs. The tools needed are
surprisingly minimal, and the problem can be fixed rather quickly.
The usual cause for the major Xbox 360 RROD is what is known as an
E74 error. This is actually a video error and in few cases can be
caused by a faulty AV cord. In most instances, however, it is
actually caused by faulty soldering on the video scaling chip on the
console’s circuit board. Before this error occurs, most consoles
start to show snow or other minor graphic problems, but this is not
always the case. It seems that the solder used by Microsoft has a
tendency to crack, break, or generally come loose over the life of
the machine.
If you have an Xbox 360 that is experiencing the red ring of death
and your console is still under the store warranty, the easiest fix
is simply to take it in and exchange it for a new model. If this
warranty has expired however, you can be prepared for high fees from
Microsoft as well as a wait of one or more months to get your
console back. The good news, however, is that you can also find a
skilled Xbox 360 RROD repair guide online that will walk you, step
by step, through the entire repair process, allowing you to fix your
console easily and quickly.
